Hi-speed Web on the move

A commercial network launched in Amsterdam last week is the first in Europe to use a mobile version of the WiMax 802.16e standard to offer mobile subscribers broadband internet access.

The pilot project is being launched by WorldMax, a privately-held company whose investors include Intel and Greenfield Capital. Initially it will be available only in the center of the Dutch city but WorldMax has plans to expand throughout the Netherlands with about 3000 WiMax sites. The total cost is expected to run to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Comparable speeds to broadband, a lower price and no long-term contract will make the service attractive as a competitor to mobile phone-based web access and especially may be attractive to teenagers, says WorldMax CEO Jeanine van der Vlist.

The cost will be about 20 euros (about U.S. $30) per month for a wireless broadband connection for laptop computers with unlimited amount of data. End of Article
