At an upcoming congress of auto engineers in Detroit, the topic on nanotechnology in automobiles will be given center stage at a special forum.
Nanotechnology is a branch of engineering that deals with design using very small particles and with the manipulation of individual molecules. At the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress in Detroit on April 6 it will be the topic for discussion by select invited panelists in a session titled " Redefining the Car of Tomorrow: Myth Vs Reality."
One of the panelists will be Rudolph Stauber, Vice President of Materials Development for the BMW Group. An example of how nanotechnology could be used, Stauber says, would be to enable a "self-healing effect on exterior body parts."
This, he explains could involve very small capsules which will break when a scratch occurs, releasing microvolumes of paint to fill in the scratches.
A few years ago, BMW established a group of a dozen or so materials scientists who were tasked with scanning the field of nanotechnology and its applications in various industries. The idea was to initiate projects which would lead to the use of nanotechnologoy in BMW automobiles.
Stauber says BMW already has applications of nanotechnology in some models. These include a rear window system in the 5 and 7 series cars which features a "nanolayer laminate."
This ultra thin layer helps reflect the heat of the sun while at the same time allowing in electromagnetic signals for telephone and other applications.
